A few years ago, Disney had a problem it couldn’t fix with more rides.
Guests were waiting in the same lines they’d always waited in. The wait times hadn’t gotten longer. But complaints about waiting had gone up. Something had shifted — not in the actual minutes people stood there, but in how those minutes felt.
The fix Disney landed on wasn’t a faster ride system. It was information. Digital signs that told guests exactly how long the wait would be, updated in real time. Nothing about the line itself changed. Complaints dropped anyway.
This tells us something important, and it really has nothing to do with theme parks.
Human beings are remarkably bad at judging time, and remarkably consistent in how we get it wrong. Researchers have spent decades studying what’s called “perceived wait time” versus actual wait time, and the findings keep pointing to the same handful of variables. Uncertainty makes time stretch. A five-minute wait with no information feels longer than a ten-minute wait with a countdown. Idle time feels longer than occupied time — the same ten minutes staring at a wall feels different than ten minutes doing anything else at all. And unexplained delays feel longest of all, because the brain treats uncertainty itself as a kind of threat, something to stay alert for rather than settle into.
This is why hospitals started putting televisions in waiting rooms decades before anyone framed it as psychology. It’s why the DMV switched to numbered tickets and visible queues instead of unmarked lines — not because it moved people through faster, but because it made the wait legible. You could see your position. You could estimate an end. The uncertainty, which was the actual source of the discomfort, got engineered out.
Airlines figured this out too, in a stranger way. Passengers consistently rate flights with a short taxi delay as more frustrating than flights that land ten minutes late but taxi to the gate immediately. The total time is often identical. What differs is the feeling of being stuck without explanation, watching a gate you can see but can’t reach.
None of this is really about lines. It’s about how badly people tolerate not knowing what’s coming, even when what’s coming is basically fine.
Consider how much of ordinary life runs on the same principle without anyone calling it out. A job application that goes unanswered for three weeks doesn’t feel like three weeks. It feels endless, because there’s no countdown, no update, no signal for how much longer the not-knowing will last. A diagnosis waiting to come back from the lab creates a specific, disproportionate kind of dread — not because the news is necessarily bad, but because the interval itself has no shape. You can’t pace yourself through a wait you can’t measure.
Compare that to grief, oddly enough, which often works the opposite way. Grief has rituals — funerals, anniversaries, a year of firsts — that give shapeless pain a rough outline. People report that even sad milestones feel more bearable than ambiguous loss, the kind with no funeral and no closure, precisely because ambiguity is what the mind struggles with most. Certainty, even certain bad news, is easier to carry than a question mark.
This might be the most quietly useful idea buried in all of it. We assume what people want is good news, or at least less waiting. Often what they really want is just to know the shape of what they’re in. Tell someone a project will take six weeks and they’ll settle in. Leave it open-ended and every day feels like a small failure to finish. The content of the news matters less than most people assume. The clarity around it matters more.
It raises an uncomfortable question for anyone managing other people, raising kids, or simply trying to be a decent friend during someone’s hard season. How often do we default to reassurance — “it’ll be fine,” “don’t worry about it” — when what the other person actually needs is a shape. Not a guarantee. Just an outline. Here’s what’s likely.
