You drove home today. You probably don’t remember most of it.
Not because you weren’t paying attention. You were. Your hands adjusted the wheel. Your foot found the brake at the right moments. You stopped at every red light and signaled every turn. You arrived safely, parked the car, walked inside.
And if someone asked you to describe the drive, you’d have almost nothing.
This isn’t a failure of memory. It’s a feature of your brain called automaticity — the process by which repeated actions become so efficient that they no longer require conscious thought. Your brain essentially builds a script for familiar tasks and runs it in the background, freeing up the conscious mind to think about dinner, or the meeting tomorrow, or nothing at all.
Psychologists have studied this for decades. The term “highway hypnosis” was first coined in 1950 by a researcher named G.W. Williams, who noticed that long-haul drivers routinely arrived at their destinations with no recollection of large portions of the trip. They hadn’t fallen asleep. They hadn’t been distracted. Their brains had simply decided that the drive wasn’t worth remembering.
Here’s what makes this interesting. The brain doesn’t automate everything. It automates the familiar. The route you’ve taken five hundred times gets filed under “handled.” The route you’ve never driven before gets your full attention — every turn feels deliberate, every landmark registers, every decision requires thought. You remember that drive because your brain had to show up for it.
This is efficient. It’s also the quiet mechanism behind a much bigger problem.
Because the brain doesn’t just automate your commute. It automates your relationships. Your conversations. Your mornings. Your Tuesdays. Anything it encounters often enough gets tagged as predictable and moved to the background. The first time you walk into your office, you notice everything — the light, the layout, the sounds. The five hundredth time, you notice nothing. Not because it changed. Because you didn’t.
This is how years disappear. Not dramatically. Not through crisis or catastrophe. They disappear because Tuesday looked a lot like Monday, and the brain decided it wasn’t worth recording the difference. You don’t forget your life. Your brain just stops filing it.
The research points to something specific about what breaks the pattern. Novelty. Not necessarily dramatic novelty — you don’t need to skydive or move to another country. Small, deliberate disruptions are enough. A different route home. A conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally talk to. Lunch somewhere you’ve never been. The bar is remarkably low. Your brain just needs a reason to pay attention again.
There’s a study from 2010 out of Washington University that found people’s perception of time actually changes based on how much novelty they experience. Weeks filled with new experiences feel longer in retrospect. Weeks filled with routine feel like they never happened. Same seven days. Completely different experience of having lived them.
This might explain something most people notice in their thirties and forties but rarely talk about. Time starts moving faster. Not because of aging, exactly. Because of repetition. Childhood feels long because almost everything is new. The brain is recording constantly. Adulthood feels short because the brain has seen most of it before and stops pressing record.
The implication is uncomfortable. If you want your life to feel longer — not in a grinding, endurance sense, but in the sense of remembering having lived it — you have to regularly interrupt your own patterns. You have to give your brain something it can’t predict. You have to make the familiar strange again, even in small ways.
The drive home doesn’t have to be invisible. But it will be, unless you take a different road once in a while.
