Every family has one person who thinks the TV is too loud and one person who thinks it’s basically muted. Every office has someone reaching for a sweater in July and someone else running the AC like they’re preparing for a heat wave. Every restaurant table eventually has the exact same argument about whether the food is spicy.
Nobody’s lying in these situations. That’s the part that’s interesting.
We tend to assume things like volume, temperature, and spice are objective — a decibel is a decibel, seventy degrees is seventy degrees, a jalapeño has a fixed amount of heat whether you’re the one eating it or not. And technically, sure, the instruments agree. But the instruments aren’t the ones sitting at the table. Perception runs through a nervous system, and nervous systems are shockingly inconsistent from one person to the next, in ways that have almost nothing to do with who’s right.
Take temperature. Women, on average, perceive a room as colder than men do at the exact same measured temperature — this isn’t a stereotype, it’s been studied repeatedly, and the leading explanation is metabolic rate and body composition differences that change how heat is retained and released. Which means the office thermostat war isn’t actually a disagreement. It’s two different bodies accurately reporting two different experiences of the identical room.
Spice tolerance works similarly but for a stranger reason. Capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers hot, doesn’t trigger a taste receptor at all — it triggers the same nerve receptor that responds to actual heat and physical pain. Your mouth isn’t tasting spice. It’s reporting an injury. And people vary enormously in how many of those receptors they have and how quickly they desensitize with repeated exposure, which is why someone who grew up eating hot food genuinely doesn’t feel what you feel from the same bite. They’re not being tough. Their nerves stopped firing as hard, possibly years ago.
Sound is maybe the strangest one, because volume feels like it should be the most objective of the three — it’s literally a measurable wave. But perceived loudness is filtered through frequency sensitivity that varies by age, prior hearing exposure, and even what sounds you grew up around. A whisper in a quiet house sounds different to someone who grew up around highway noise than to someone who grew up in the countryside. Neither one is wrong about what they’re hearing. They’ve just been calibrated by two different childhoods.
Here’s where it gets a little uncomfortable, because this obviously isn’t really about weather or whispers. Most disagreements people have — the ones that escalate way past what the topic deserves — are two nervous systems reporting two different experiences of the same objective event, and both sides assuming the other one must be exaggerating, or lying, or being dramatic. It rarely occurs to anyone that the other person’s nervous system might just be built differently, and that neither reading is the “correct” one.
Which maybe explains why “just calm down” has never once worked on anybody. It assumes the other person is choosing their reaction rather than reporting it. Telling someone their spicy food isn’t spicy, or their cold room isn’t cold, doesn’t change what their body is telling them. It just tells them you don’t believe their body.
None of this means every argument is secretly about biology — sometimes the thermostat war really is just about who wants to save money on the electric bill. But it’s a decent reminder, next time somebody insists the room is freezing and you’re sitting there in a t-shirt completely fine, that you might both be right, reporting from two different nervous systems that were never going to agree in the first place.
